The park’s history began when a large parcel of land was donated to the city by Levi Addison Ault in 1911. He had previously donated 30 acres of land that had been part of a vineyard. Throughout the years, the parcel grew and expanded. Eventually, Ault Park became the fourth largest park in the city.

In 1907, a plan was drawn up by landscape architect George Kessler to create a comprehensive park system in the city.
