Every summer, Cincinnati weather gives us unpredictable thunderstorms including tornadoes and damaging hail. Storms can require major cleanup in our homes. While the weather is difficult to predict, a reliable team to help you with water damage cleanup is only a phone call away.
Roofs Have Limited Lifespan
Excessive wind and hail will deteriorate the materials even faster. Water leaking through the roof while it is raining could be due to damaged shingles, improper installation, or failed flashing details at penetrations and walls. It may even be due to damaged window sills, improper siding installations, or severe wind-driven rain. This may result in the need for storm damage cleanup in your home.
Most of the time, a roof leak will form a small puddle in the attic until it finds an escape route: a light fixture, heating register, ceiling joists, or other low points. If the ceiling is holding water or you might see a bulge in the drywall, you will need to deal with both the roof problem and the resulting damage to your home. Take time to inspect the roof for rain seepage behind split shingles or through leaky flashing.
Maintain Your Gutters And Downspouts
Clogged up rain gutters and downspouts can result in pooling water on your roof, and eventually to major leaks and severe water damage. Spending just a little bit of time on removing the debris from these areas can prevent major problems down the road. You should also make sure that your downspouts are discharging the proper distance away from your house (a minimum of 10 feet) to prevent flooding.
Improve Your Home’s Natural Drainage
You can’t control the rain but you can control the effect that it has on your property. Carefully plan the route of excess water from your home and foundation out to the city drain system out in the street. Periodically check the grate for excess leaves or trash that could impede drainage during a hard rain.
Check the slope of the ground around your home. All water should be directed several feet away from your foundation. If the ground slopes toward your house, grade the yard for better flow. Install additional drainage systems, such as French drains. If your driveway slopes toward the home, consider a barrier to redirect water to away from the garage.
